Jaspers, Karl (Theodor)
(23 feb. 1883, Oldenburgo, Alemania–26 1969, Basilea, Suiza).

Filósofo y psiquiatra alemán. Como psiquiatra investigador, contribuyó a establecer la psicopatología sobre una base rigurosa, científicamente descriptiva, en especial su Psicopatología general (1913). Enseñó filosofía en la Universidad de Heidelberg de 1921 a 1937, año en que el régimen nazi le prohibió trabajar. Desde 1948 vivió en Suiza, donde enseñó en la Universidad de Basilea. En su obra magna, Filosofía (3 vol., 1969), sostuvo que el objetivo de la filosofía es práctico; su propósito es la realización de la existencia humana (Existenz). Para Jaspers, la iluminación filosófica se alcanza en la experiencia de situaciones límite, como el conflicto, la culpa y el sufrimiento, que definen la condición humana. En su confrontación con los extremos el ser humano alcanza su humanidad existencial. Jaspers es una de las figuras más importantes del existencialismo.
